Live Dealer Baccarat

Live baccarat can be a very high stakes and exciting game, just like its brick and mortar casino counterpart but without the need to travel to a casino. You can play online live baccarat any time, day or night. The flexibility of online live dealer baccarat gives you the freedom to set your own schedule in an environment uniquely tailored to your tastes, your own home. You can listen to the music you prefer, dress however you like and eat your favorite foods, all while experiencing the thrill of the original high-roller’s game.

Every casino has their own house rules, but at its heart, live baccarat is a simple, straightforward game. At the beginning of the deal, live baccarat players wager on the possible outcomes of the deal, that is, which position will win the hand: Banker, Player, or Tie. The dealer handles the rest. “Banker” and “Player” are merely positions to wager on, they don’t represent actual people in the game. After all bets have been placed, two hands are dealt by the dealer, one to the “Banker” position and one to the “Player” position. The hand with a value closest to nine is the winning hand.

Live Baccarat Card Values

Each card has a value of a certain number of points. The number cards 2 through 9 have the same number of points as their face value. Face cards and tens are valued at zero. An ace is worth one point. The value of a hand is its sum’s rightmost, or final, digit. So a hand with a 2 and a 4 is worth 6, but a hand with a 5 and a 9 is worth 4, because 4 is the final digit of 14, the point total of that hand. This means the the highest possible point value of any given hand is a 9.

When Does a Dealer Draw a Third Card?

Baccarat is generally known for its simplicity of play. However, the one area where things get a little complicated surrounds the issue of the third card. There are specific rules that the dealer must follow when it comes to drawing a third card. These rules are known as a table of play, or “tableau” and it confuses a lot of new players.

The rules for the position of Banker and Player are different, adding to the confusion. If either Banker’s or Player’s initial hand has a value of eight or nine, the dealer will not draw a third card for either hand. Known as a “natural”, this outcome ends the game with a win for whichever position possesses it.

Live Baccarat Tableau

If neither position is dealt a natural, then the dealer consults the tableau. The Player’s rules are consulted first. If the Player’s initial hand has a value of 0-5 points, he is dealt a third card. If the initial value of the player’s hand is 6 or 7, the position stands.

Next the dealer will consult the Banker’s rule, which is based on the Player’s outcome. If the Player’s position stands, that is, was not dealt a third card, the Banker’s position is judged by the same rules as the Player’s. Meaning that the Banker will be dealt a third card if his initial hand has a value of 0-5, and no additional card is dealt if his initial hand has a value of either 6 or 7 points.

If the Player was dealt a third card, the rules get a bit more complicated, based on the value of the Player’s third card and the value of the Banker’s hand. Casinos usually lay out the rules like this:

  • When the banker’s hand values 2 points or less, the Banker is dealt an additional card no matter what the value of the Player’s third card was.
  • When the banker’s hand values 3 points, the Banker is dealt an additional card unless the value of the Player’s third card was 8.
  • When the banker’s hand values 4 points, the Banker is dealt an additional card if the value of the Player’s third card was 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7.
  • When the banker’s hand values 5 points, the Banker is dealt an additional card if the value of the Player’s third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7.
  • When the banker’s hand values 6 points, the Banker is dealt an additional card if the value of the Player’s third card was 6, or 7.
  • When the banker’s hand values 7 points, the Banker stands and is not dealt an additional card.

These rule basically “automate” all decisions in the game. If it all seems complicated, don’t worry, it is the dealer’s job to know these rules, not yours! All you need to do is place your bet, sit back, and enjoy the thrill of playing live baccarat in a Live Dealer Casino.
